The Best Plant Nurseries in San Antonio

Have I spent most of my time looking for plants in the past couple of weeks? Yes! Is it because I want to find specific plants, also yes! Chances are you’re also looking for plants- so I did the work of going to all the plant nurseries in San Antonio to find out which places are the best for your needs. So you can spend less money on gas and more on growing plants to fulfill your life’s dream.

I still have a couple more nurseries to visit before I can write about them slightly outside of SA, but these are a great place to start your collection.

The Botanical Garden

This is one of those if you know you know places because most people don’t know that The Botanical Garden has a plant sale. Like I didn’t know until I walked past it. Their selection is pretty small but it’s also worthy to check out.

Evergreen Garden

If you were looking for fruit trees Evergreen is the spot. I know most places are great for trees but their selection of fruit trees was gorgeous. They are another smaller nursery compared to most on this list so it’s a great place to start. Also their staghorn fern‘s relatively affordable compared to everywhere else and they were gorgeous. I think they focus more on a limited plant supply so if you’re in the market for some thing popular chances are you’ll find it here. Another cute thing is that they have a little gift shop with plant T-shirts.

Fanick’s Garden Center

What I love about Fanick’s it’s how big it is and You can pretty much find everything here from ferns to succulents, trees to herbs, it’s 1 kind of an overall great place to look for your white whale of plants. I personally have an obsession with dragon fruit and found that their selection was the prettiest. And also while I was there the people really helped out and walked me through the process of selecting soil for seeds.

The Garden Center

In The Garden Center is another great spot on the far northwest side of San Antonio for your gardening needs. I like that the spot has a dedicated area for the xeriscaping if you were looking to save from water and have a gorgeous garden. They have a great selection of fruit trees. I also went inside and looked at their starter kits and they’re relatively affordable compared to other places. Again another small nursery but you will probably find some pretty unique items here.

Milberger nursery

I cannot speak loud enough for how beautiful Milberger Gardens is. The staff is ridiculously kind. I went there looking for physical graffiti my obsession and the staff walked me through all of their dragon fruit and even talk to me about my plant goals. The whole lot is completely gorgeous. Great selection of fruit trees, outdoor shrubs and indoor plants.

PalmBuddha

Hand to God, Palm Buddha is the most beautiful nursery I have ever been to. I will fight anybody who says otherwise. Driving into it is literally like driving into heaven. The whole nursery is covered in palms and bamboo so it’s like you’re in a tropical oasis. This nursery specializes obviously in palm and bamboo if you’re looking to do landscaping but they also have one of the most beautiful selections of succulents. Like this has to be my favorite selection of succulents in the entire city.

I am regretting sharing this with you because now we’re all going to fight for those succulents. When you’re headed there drive slow because there is a dedicated entrance and exit and you’ll probably miss it. Great staff that will help you out and answer any questions. Also they specialize in succulent arrangements.

Rainbow Gardens- Northeast

Rainbow Gardens north east is probably one of the best places to find plants like snake plants and herbs in my opinion. They have a great selection of house plants and anything to start a homestead. They also had multiple different kinds of dragon fruit. However they didn’t have physical graffiti which if you know I’mobsessed with.

Again great selection of trees and this is a spot if you were looking for some shade in your backyard.

Rainbow Gardens- Northwest

I don’t know how to put it in words bu I’m gonna try: Rainbow Gardens on the north west side is absolutely stunning. It’s literally perfect. Everything about this place is extremely organized and you’ll find everything there as labeled.

A great place for you if you’re looking for herbs and vegetables. Basically if you’re looking to start a Homestead start here.

Shades of Green

What I love about Shades of Green is that is so conveniently located for most people because of its central location. Another thing that I really like, is that as a beginner gardener, most nurseries can be really big and intimidating. The size of the nursery is pretty approachable for the novice gardener. If you’re in the market for certain house plants specifically trees like fiddle leaf fig (not beginner friendly lol) and pothos this is a great place to start looking.

Tillage

Tillage might be the smallest nursery on the list but that doesn’t mean anything. Walking inside those doors is literally like walking into a dream house. Like Barbie has nothing on this house. If you are a downtowner then this might be the spot for you because it is so close and you could probably drive 5 mph with a giant ass fiddle leaf hanging out your window and still make it home safely.

Plant Pop-ups!

Sometimes you can’t find the plant you’re looking for so you need some thing more like a plant Hunter. At least that’s what I call them. They’re like those art hunters that you kind of hint at what you’re looking for and they hunted down for you and you become super happy. Enter the plant pop-ups: here’s the ones you should be following obsessively to get your next fix.

Plant Shoppe

I don’t know how to explain this but when I become obsessed with the plants nothing can come in my way. I will not buy anything else until I find that check it off my list and then move forward. That’s how it was with a lithop. Super happy that the Plant Shoppe carries them, they do pop-ups about twice a month and you can follow them on Instagram or they’ll deliver to your home.

Plant Parenthood

So I haven’t really purchased from Plant Parenthood, yet. (Again plant obsession means chasing the thrill). From what I see they post a selection and you just DM them for pick up. Plants look super beautiful and that you’re able to shop from the comfort of your own home. A lot of them look pretty easy to take care of so if you’re a beginner, I’d recommend them.
