Latin American Eats

We all love good food and with a whole world of different cuisines literally south of us why not celebrate the various ways Latinx people prepare food. As you know, I grew up in LA- surrounded by a multitude of Central and South Americans and their cuisines. So in moving to SA it’s been a tough moment missing out on several cuisines and dishes because I haven’t found my Latinx. 

So to help you and also generate a love of more food- I’ve compiled a list of all the Latinx restaurants in SA that you should check out to celebrate during Hispanic Heritage Month here in San Antonio. During Hispanic Heritage Month the following countries are celebrated:

Also for the sake of the space, I’ve decided to put Mexican food on its own post. Which I’ll link to when it is finished.

Argentina

For a city that had an Argentinian basketball player- we’re severely missing an actual Argentinian steakhouse in San Antonio. I personally grew up with Asado in my life and it’s a def need. If you’re headed to an Argentine spot my suggestions are choripán (chorizo sandwich), dulce de leche or an empanada.

Bolivia

There’s going to be a pattern in this list but where my Bolivians at? We’re at least able to get some salteñas (baked empanadas) but we’re missing a whole world of Altiplano cuisine. Arroz con queso, silpancho, and fricasé are missed.

Chile

Chilean food is one of my favorite foods in all of Latin America. I grew up with so many Chilenos that I actually pronounce my ch and ll’s the way they do, occasionally I’ll say al tiro, some Chilean profanity, and use their words when referring to everyday objects. Needless to say- San Antonio, where are your Chilean restaurants at?

Colombia

I’m so glad we have a huge selection of Colombian restaurants in San Antonio. They have the best cumbia music but their cuisine is a mixture of several different influences and varies from the coast to the inland. It’s one of my favorites so please get out there and eat some Colombian food.

Cuba 

Cuban food is something magical. I love their Caribbean flair and how each flavor is just amazing. I’ve found a few spots to add to the San Antonio list but hopefully, we’re able to call out for more spots in the city.

Salvadoran food is like the best-kept secret. If you know, you know. And if you’re not on the pupusa train just yet we’ve gotta rectify it. Pupusas are like quesadillas but a million times better. Needless to San Antonio’s really got a little more than a handful of restaurants to choose from.

A long time ago my neighbor had a Panamanian food truck. Her food was amazing and life was good. Then the food truck took an indefinite hiatus and it sucks for y’all. Occasionally they do special orders. But luckily we still have two spots on this list for Panamanian food.

Peru

Peruvian food is bomb. I’m not really an expert in it compared to other South American Cuisines but I’m lucky to have a friend who is Peruvian and shares her culture with me. We’re actually pretty lucky to have multiple Peruvian restaurants in San Antonio, including a fusion restaurant at the Pearl. Their cuisine has a lot of Asian influence and you can notice it a lot in their preparations of ceviche.

Spain

This might be the case where people are probably like: “oh, I studied abroad 4 years ago in Madrid and this is authentic,” portion of the blog post. Better yet, this is where we say Barthelona instead of Barcelona and truth is you probably never left the tourist path. Spanish food supposed to be flavorful, meant to be eaten super late, and with friends. Granted, that’s actually applicable to all Latin food.
